Your driveway might not be the most exciting part of your home, but sprucing it up with some sparkle can make it look really cool! Most people just reseal their driveways every few years to protect against sun and weather damage, but why not make it look fancy while you’re at it? Adding some sparkle grain to the sealant can give your driveway a glistening, eye-catching effect, especially at night when the light hits it just right. It’s like putting a little makeup on your driveway!
The sparkly bits don’t just look good – they also provide a bit more traction, which can come in handy on rainy days. And the best part is, it’s a pretty affordable upgrade. Your contractor can easily sprinkle the sparkle grain over the wet sealant as they apply it.
There are lots of other ways to jazz up your driveway too, like adding some LED lights along the edges. Get creative and make your driveway the talk of the neighborhood!
How to apply sparkle grain to your driveway
Sprinkling on that sparkle grain is actually pretty easy. Your contractor will first pour the coal tar sealant over the asphalt and spread it out evenly with squeegees. While the sealant is still wet, they’ll grab a bucket of the sparkle grain – it comes in black or white – and toss it all over the surface. Some pros also have special funnels that feed the grain into a hopper to spread it more evenly.
The next day, they’ll come back and use a mix of muriatic acid and water to really make the sparkles pop. Even if you skip the sparkle, regular sealing is still important to protect your driveway, especially if you live in an area with lots of snow and ice. And if you need extra traction, resin-bound gravel is an even better option than the sparkle grain.
