Best IKEA Smart Home Buys (and What to Skip) Based on Reviews

6-ikea-smart-home-products-worth-buying,-and-ones-to-skip,-according-to-reviews

Looks like a lot of folks are jumping on the smart home bandwagon these days – about half of U.S. homes have at least one smart device! If you’re curious to try it out, IKEA’s got all sorts of smart lights, sensors, and remotes you can check out. But be careful not to just grab the first thing that catches your eye – some of their smart home products can be hit or miss. To help you out, we’ve rounded up the best IKEA smart home picks, as well as the ones you should probably skip.

To figure this out, we read through tons of customer reviews and weighed the pros and cons of each item. The ones that had high ratings, lots of 5-star reviews, and more positives than negatives made our “worth buying” list. Anything with connectivity issues, poor accuracy, or a bunch of 1-star reviews ended up in the “skip” category. Just keep in mind that to control any smart home device from IKEA (even Matter-based ones), you’ll need to get their Dirigera hub.

The Pilskott LED Pendant Lamp supports wireless dimming

If you want to adjust the brightness of your hanging lights, check out the Pilskott LED Pendant Lamp. It works with other IKEA smart home products and has a built-in LED strip that can light up your rooms for around 25,000 hours. Plus, you can wirelessly dim it to set the perfect mood and brightness for any task. You’ll need to buy a separate dimmer to control it remotely, though.

This smart pendant lamp has over 100 reviews and an average rating of 4.0 stars, with 60% of buyers giving it 5 stars. One reviewer said, “We wanted a light that did the job, but wasn’t distracting to the eye. The clean lines of this light filled the bill. It looks great with a pleasing warm white – not a harsh white. Paired with a dimmer, it’s everything we hoped for.” A few did mention it was a bit tricky to install, though.

The Timmerflotte Temperature/Humidity Sensor suffers from connectivity issues

A smart temperature and humidity sensor can be super handy for things like keeping your indoor plants happy or optimizing your home’s energy efficiency. But the Timmerflotte version seems to struggle with connectivity. Lots of reviewers had trouble getting it to connect to the DIRIGERA hub, and even when it did, the connection didn’t last long. Some also mentioned issues linking it to other smart home platforms, even though it uses Matter. A few also doubted its accuracy.

With close to 150 reviews, this sensor has a 3.9 average rating, and over 12% of buyers gave it 1 star. One unhappy customer said, “I tried many times to get it to connect to my Thread network. It failed every time. I talked to customer service multiple times. Went through router reboots, settings changes, sensor resets… Nothing got these working.” Others echoed similar frustrations.

The Starkvind Air Purifier works as expected

The Starkvind Air Purifier is a smart device you can control through IKEA’s app. You can turn it on/off, adjust the fan speed, control the LED light, and even check your home’s air quality when you’re away. You can also pair it with Alexa, Apple Home, or Google Home for voice commands. This model filters out 99.5% of tiny allergens and dust. You can even add a gas filter for extra protection, but you’ll have to buy that separately. Just keep in mind it’s only suited for rooms under 215 sq ft.

With over 100 reviews, the air purifier has a 4.4 average rating, and 67% of buyers gave it 5 stars. One happy customer shared, “Home assistant picked the device up quickly via Zigbee integration. Pressing the button above the filter till it flashed for a couple seconds to activate pairing mode.” Some wished it had wheels to make it easier to move around, but overall it seems to work well.

The Parasoll Door/Window Sensor disconnects often and has poor battery life

The Parasoll Door/Window Sensor is supposed to notify you when doors or windows are left open, but customer reviews suggest it’s not very reliable. Apparently, it frequently disconnects from the Dirigera hub without warning, compromising your home’s security. And the rechargeable battery tends to drain really fast – some users said they had to replace it after just 60 days.

With close to 150 reviews, this sensor has a 3.8 average rating, and over 13% of buyers gave it 1 star. One frustrated customer said, “Falls off the network and stops responding too often, battery life is also poor just lasts a few weeks. I also used recommended IKEA batteries. After researching other people have the same issues. It’s also slow to respond and gets stuck in the open or closed position if the state changes too quickly.” Lack of software updates is another issue.

The Tretakt Smart Plug lets you connect any household appliance

One of the best things about smart home tech is being able to control your appliances remotely. But if you don’t have any smart home devices yet, the Tretakt Smart Plug is a great option. You can use it to connect and control lamps, coffee makers, and other small devices through the IKEA app. You can even set timers and use voice commands. Customers like that it’s easy to set up, works with the Tradfri gateway, and can even be used outdoors. Just keep in mind its power capacity is limited to 1,800 watts.

The smart plug has over 250 reviews and a 4.3 average rating, with 65% of buyers giving it 5 stars. One reviewer said, “It’s a smart plug. It turns on and off when it’s supposed to. You just plug it in, poke the pairing button with a push pin, open the hue app and tell it to find the plug, and it pairs to your network like a good zigbee product is supposed to do. It’s nice when things just work.” A few wished it was a bit more compact, though.

The Vallhorn Wireless Motion Sensor detects motion even when there isn’t any

IKEA claims the Vallhorn Wireless Motion Sensor can detect movement up to 15 feet away at a 120-degree angle, and automatically turn on connected lights. But customer reviews say this sensor has a knack for detecting motion when there isn’t any. So you can’t really rely on it to trigger your lights reliably. In fact, some users said it didn’t even turn on lights when they were just a few feet away.

Over 100 buyers have reviewed this motion sensor, and over 40% gave it 1 star, bringing the average down to 2.7. One unhappy customer wrote, “The one i set up is constantly detecting motion 100% of the time. Tried 3 different sets of IKEA rechargeable batteries and also reset and re-paired the device 3 times. Same result each time. Not up to IKEA’S normal high standards for smart home devices.” Some also disliked that it only worked with IKEA batteries.

The Symfonisk Sonos WiFi Bookshelf Speaker sounds great

The Symfonisk Sonos WiFi Bookshelf Speaker is the result of an IKEA and Sonos collab, and it works great with other Sonos products. You can use it to stream music, audiobooks, and podcasts from popular platforms like Spotify and Apple AirPlay 2. Just download the Sonos app. You can even sync multiple speakers for a stereo effect. Users love the rich sound quality and how easy it is to pair with their smart home assistants. Plus, it doubles as a floating shelf!

The smart speaker has nearly 100 reviews and a 4.1 average rating, with over 67% of buyers giving it 5 stars. One happy customer said, “We love these speakers even more than our regular Sonos speakers, as they connect with Apple play too! We added them to our network of speakers and they work perfectly
