When space is limited, sharing a closet can be the way to go for lifelong partners, siblings, and close pals. But it can easily get messy and even lead to arguments, especially if both people don’t have time to put things back where they belong after digging through the wardrobe. HGTV star Nate Berkus says there’s a simple fix – assign each person a different colored hanger.

“Assign a hanger color to each person. That’s what Jeremiah and I do,” Berkus wrote on Instagram. Using different colored hangers makes it easy to see whose clothes are whose, so you only grab what belongs to you. This cuts down the time spent sorting through the shared closet, keeping everything nice and tidy.

Nate’s colored hanger trick is a great start, but you can take it even further. Try using two colors per person – for example, use pink for your tops and purple for your bottoms, while your closet buddy uses blue and green. Get a multi-colored hanger pack to make this easy.

You can also organize your clothes by color, size, and how often you wear them, like Nate suggests. Grouping similar items together not only looks great, but makes it a breeze to get dressed in the morning. “It’s a system that works every time,” Nate says.
