Most bouquets have a nice blend of different blooms, but monobloom arrangements keep things simple and modern by sticking to just one type of flower, often in a single color. For example, a bunch of sunny yellow tulips, or a classy arrangement of elegant orchids, instead of mixing a bunch of different flowers. But with curated bouquets being so popular for so long, is this floral trend really going to take over? To get the scoop, we talked to floral expert Spencer Falls, who told us, “In my opinion, monobloom arrangements are not trending. People love a mix of colors, textures, and fragrances. This works best with a variety of stems.“
So there you have it – the perfectly matched botanicals may be having a moment, but they’re not about to replace the true art of custom-curated arrangements. As Falls, who designs florals for weddings, events, and more, explained, “When you use different flowers, you can create depth and dimension in a way that just isn’t possible with a monobloom.” Instead, he recommends working with a florist or shopping at a local market to choose a thoughtful mix of blooms. Falls also shared some tips on picking flowers that complement the space, work for your needs, and stay on-trend.
Mixed arrangements are still leading over the monobloom trend

Mixing different flowers can also serve a practical purpose, providing both visual and physical weight. “My clients have been wanting long stems that reach high in their rooms and still hold the weight in the bottom,” Spencer Falls told us. In one case, he blended snapdragons and hydrangeas to meet a client’s needs – “It worked because of the different shapes of the flowers. Hydrangeas are large and low while snapdragons are tall and slender.” Falls also says that lush greenery helps anchor arrangements and lets the flowers shine.
Of course, mixing flowers does mean some may wilt faster than others. Short-lived blooms like tulips or daylilies might not be the best choice unless you don’t mind daily maintenance. “My recommendation is always to use hearty, drought-tolerant flowers like protea and wax flower,” Falls says, “That way they’ll last longest in the vase.” Keeping them in a cool, smoke-free spot also helps.

The good news is, you don’t have to be a floral expert to put together a great arrangement. Floral designer Spencer Falls shared some key tips – first, think about where the flowers will go before you even start arranging. “Knowing where you are going to put the arrangement before you arrange it is always a great idea. That way you know the best composition.” Consider the colors, textures, and furniture in the room, and let that inspire your flower choices. The height of the space can also influence the height of your display – tall ceilings call for tall, eye-catching blooms. And the overall energy and activity level of the room matters too – a busy living room may need bright, sturdy flowers like sunflowers, while a relaxing bathroom could benefit from something more soft and subtle, like baby’s breath.
Considering the room is one of the most helpful tips, whether you’re picking flowers for a gift or for your own home. As for the most on-trend colors right now, Falls says “It always depends on the occasion and location. Sometimes it’s vibrant greens, blues, oranges, reds, and yellows. Other times it’s muted blushes, soft blues, and pastels.“
