Repurpose an Old Frame to Neatly Store Your Hair Clips

Hair accessories can be a real pain to organize. Even the tidiest bathrooms often have a pile of claw and bow clips spilling over the shelves and onto the floor. But you don’t have to stash them in the dark corners of your drawers, where they’ll just get forgotten. Instead, you can turn an old picture frame into a cute and creative storage solution for your hair clips.

You might be wondering how on earth a picture frame can become a storage device. But trust us, this is one of the easiest and most clever DIY projects out there. We got the idea from @lanoraviruss’s post, where she upcycled an old frame into a fancy holder for her claw clips and scrunchies. This DIY turns your hair accessories into the works of art they truly are, instead of just throwing them in a bin. Unlike a regular storage container, a picture frame hair clip organizer keeps everything tidy and within easy reach. All you need is an old frame, some dowels, sandpaper, wood filler, and a bit of spray paint.

To start, dig out that old picture frame from storage. Don’t have one? Picking up a cheap frame from the thrift store or craft store will work just fine. The perfect size depends on how many hair clips you need to store, but a medium 11×14 frame is a good place to start. Measure your frame so you know what size dowels to get. The length of the dowels will depend on the inner dimensions of your frame. You can have the dowels cut to size at the hardware store, or order them online and cut them yourself.

Now it’s time to prep your frame. Take out the backing, glass, and any clips holding them in place. If your frame has any chips or scratches you want to cover up, use wood filler to smooth them out, then sand it down. Wipe away any dust, and you’re ready to start assembling your DIY hair clip storage.

Use a ruler and pencil to mark where you want to place the dowels on the back of the frame. Space them out to fit your clips, making sure to leave more room for larger claw clips and bows. Then just slot the dowels into the grooves on the back of the frame. If they don’t stay put on their own, you can glue them in place.

And there you have it – a chic and functional storage solution for your hair accessories! For a final touch, you can spray paint the frame in any color you like. Once it’s dry, you can even add a few extra dowels at the bottom to hang headbands or use hooks for scrunchies and hair ties.
