The old saying “here today, gone tomorrow” really applies to home decor and design trends. One example of a once-popular house fixture that now feels outdated is polished porcelain flooring.
According to interior designer Miller, polished porcelain floors made a big splash in the early 1990s and 2000s, with their sleek, minimal look appearing in every luxury home. But today’s homeowners are leaning away from all that shine and gloss, and instead embracing more natural, earthy materials and textures.
Glossy tiles are now seen as too cold and commercial – we want something warmer and more timeless. Natural stone, mosaics, and even carpets are the new favorites.
What to do if you already have polished porcelain floors — and what to try instead
If you’ve already got polished porcelain floors, don’t worry – they can still look great if you take care of them. Just clean and regrout the tiles for a more updated look. But if you’re ready for a change, Miller recommends going for floors made of natural materials like hardwood, marble, or even terracotta. And instead of a super shiny finish, opt for something with a matte look – it’s much more on-trend these days.
