Oops, looks like a bright red item got mixed in with your whites, huh? No worries, it happens to the best of us. Those pink stains on your clothes and towels can be a real bummer, but don’t stress – there’s an easy fix with something you probably already have in your kitchen: vinegar.
You see, those pink splotches are caused by the dye bleeding from the red item. It’s super common, especially when clothes are new and the dye isn’t fully set. The heat and agitation of the wash cycle makes the dye release and transfer to your other laundry. But no need to panic, vinegar can work wonders to get rid of those stains.
The acetic acid in vinegar helps lift and loosen up the dye molecules, without bleaching or fading your fabrics. Just mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle, spritz it on the stains, and let it sit for up to 30 minutes before rinsing. You can also soak the items in a vinegar-water solution for 30-60 minutes. If the stains are stubborn, try making a paste with vinegar and baking soda, letting it sit, then washing again with a vinegar-water-detergent mix. Easy peasy!
Getting rid of pink dye stains on light items with vinegar
The key is to act fast when you spot those pink stains. Don’t toss the clothes in the dryer – that will just set the stains in. Instead, grab your vinegar and get to work. Spray the vinegar-water solution directly on the stains and let it sit for up to 30 minutes before rinsing. Or, you can soak the items in a vinegar-water bath for half an hour to an hour.
Now, regular detergent usually isn’t strong enough to tackle color bleeding stains. But vinegar can do the trick. Just be careful not to use too much baking soda, as that can cause fading. A little paste of baking soda and vinegar can help scrub out stubborn spots, then finish by soaking in a vinegar-water-detergent mix before washing again. Easy peasy!
