A day out at the Texas State Fair turned into a nightmare for a Dallas mother when someone stole a purse full of life-saving medicine from her terminally ill son’s wheelchair. What happened next, though, showed how quickly a stranger can step in to help.
Kayla Price is a single mother. Her 3-year-old son Devin has stage IV terminal brain cancer. On Tuesday she took him to the fair because he had been feeling better, and the family wanted a happy day together.
A moment’s distraction
Price looked away briefly to check on her older son. When she turned back to Devin, the purse that had been hanging from his wheelchair had vanished.
Inside was $2,000 worth of medication that stops Devin from having seizures, along with $1,500 in cash. Price described the medicine as life-saving for her son.
The loss hit especially hard because of how far Devin’s illness has progressed. He has been through six rounds of chemotherapy and 45 sessions of radiation therapy. His condition has since worsened, and he has been placed in hospice care.
"The potential of my son having a seizure and me not having that medication … it sucks," Price said. "I could lose everything because of someone’s careless act. It really hurts because I would do anything for my baby."
A plea to the thief
Price filed a police report with the Dallas Police Department, hoping officers would track down the thief and the missing medication. The department has not commented.
She also spoke directly to whoever took the bag. "You don’t know the pain that you’re causing me or my kids who you’re hurting. Just give it all back."
A stranger steps in
The story reached Chris Bailey, who runs a Facebook page called Everybody Loves Everybody. He was moved by what he read and contacted Price’s family, donating $2,000 to pay for replacement medication, the same value as what was stolen.
"When you see someone in need, do you say ‘I sure hope they get some help,’ or do you just help them?" Bailey wrote on Thursday.
The boy behind the story
Earlier this year Price set up a GoFundMe page to support Devin’s fight. She explained that the family had to move far from home so he could receive the best care, which put extra emotional and financial strain on them.
She described a little boy whose spirit has not dimmed. "Despite everything he’s going through, Devin is still the happiest little boy," she wrote. "He loves dancing, Spider-Man, SpongeBob, and making everyone around him smile."
Where things stand
Thanks to Bailey’s gift, the family can now replace the seizure medication that was taken. There has been no word on whether the thief or the stolen purse has been found, and police have not said whether they are investigating. For now, Price can focus on making memories with Devin and his siblings.
