A man who hides his face and disguises his voice says he has travelled to the year 3311 and brought back photographic proof. The pictures he shared look like scenes from a science fiction film, and that is exactly where viewers think they belong.

The man appeared in a video on a YouTube channel, with his face blurred and his voice altered. He said he had an "extremely interesting story" involving his past and future. "What I am telling you is true and I even have the evidence to prove it," he said.

Three photos from the far future

He then showed three photographs, which he said he took almost 1,300 years from now. The first appears to show a futuristic city built on a floating platform hovering in the sky above a green landscape.

He said he then stepped into the teleportation machine again and took another photo elsewhere. It showed a building he described as a typical home in the far future.

The third picture showed a flying vehicle cruising above several houses and areas of greenery. He presented all three as proof that his account was genuine.

A secret programme

The man said he was picked for a top-secret time travel programme in the 1990s because of his computer science achievements. He claimed the secrets of moving through time had been cracked with the help of quantum computing.

He refused to name the organisation but insisted that similar organisations exist and are running secret programmes behind closed doors.

The pictures fall apart

The evidence did not survive much scrutiny. All three images turned out to be edited versions of pictures that already exist. The floating city was digitally added to a mountain forest valley desktop wallpaper found on a themes website.

The supposed home of the future was a manipulated shot of the Antilia building, the private Mumbai residence of Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani.

Several viewers spotted the trick and said so in the comments. One user wrote: "These ‘pictures’ look about as real as Japanese animation." Another suggested: "Next time at least take a selfie so that we can clarify it’s not photoshopped."

What physics says

The story also sits uneasily with real science. Professor William Hiscock of Montana State University, an expert in the physics of time, explained that time dilation lets people move forward through time but not backward.

He said travel into the past is "a much more uncertain proposition". Einstein’s equations of general relativity have many solutions that would let a person meet themselves, or their grandmother, at an earlier time.

The difficulty, he said, is deciding whether those solutions could occur in the real universe or are "mere mathematical oddities incompatible with known physics".

Where things stand

The mystery man has not revealed his identity, and nobody has found any sign of the secret programme he describes. For now, his glimpse of the year 3311 looks like a wallpaper, a Mumbai mansion and a lot of editing software, with no proof that anyone has visited the future.
