A masked man calling himself James Oliver says he comes from a far-off galaxy and is marooned on Earth. He also says he has a warning for the rest of us. He claims to be a time traveller, and he insists that climate change is pushing humanity toward disaster. His message, delivered from an undisclosed location, has caught attention online, even though there is very little scientific support for the idea that anyone can travel through time.
A warning from an unknown location
James spoke to paranormal investigators at the YouTube channel Panorama Elite. He said that rising temperatures will bring "fairly large problems" and "environmental issues" in the years ahead. He admitted he is not particularly well-learned in the subject, but said that, knowing the outcome, it seems to him the crisis is a mix of natural forces and human actions.
He explained that some of it is beyond our control. "Time is a river, you know, you cannot change the direction of a river by throwing pebbles into it but you can get closer, right?" he said. He added that being wary of environmental concerns is a big part of what is going on in the immediate future.
Harsh words for politicians
James also had sharp criticism for modern politics. He argued that partisan divisions are stopping real answers from taking shape. He urged nations across the globe to come together and tackle the climate emergency as one.
In his own colourful words, the politics of the world "has taken a nosedive off of the idiot tree and smacked every branch on the way down." He was careful to say the problem is not a shortage of brains. "It’s not like you have people in politics who aren’t intelligent, because you do, they just don’t know how to work together," he said.
He described a deep split between nations that does no good for humanity as a whole. "Cooperation and conscience are two key factors in determining the future for yourself," he said.
What do scientists say?
This is not the first time James has tried to make his case. He has previously appeared on the YouTube channel Apex TV, where he attempted to convince viewers that he is a genuine time traveller. Even so, there is precious little scientific proof that people can really move through time.
William Hiscock, a physics professor at Montana State University, told Scientific American that scientists have not cracked the technology. He said travel into the past, which is what most people mean by time travel, is "a much more uncertain proposition." Many solutions to Einstein’s equation of General Relativity would let a person follow a timeline that leads to meeting themselves, or their grandmother, at an earlier time.
The difficulty, Hiscock said, is deciding whether those solutions could occur in the real universe or whether they are "mathematical oddities incompatible with known physics."
Where things stand
For now, James Oliver remains masked and his location remains secret. His claims about where he comes from and what he knows about the future have not been proven. What he offers is a message about climate and cooperation, which he asks the world to take seriously, whatever people make of the messenger.
