An anonymous man has told the internet he is a time traveller who has come back from the year 3311, and he has photographs he says prove it. The pictures, however, did not survive a closer look, and viewers were quick to say so.

The man appeared on the YouTube channel ApexTV and promised an "extremely interesting story" about his own past and what lies ahead for the world. "What I am telling you is true and I even have the evidence to prove it," he said.

Three pictures from the future

He then showed three images that he said gave a glimpse of the planet in roughly 1,300 years. The first appeared to show a futuristic city on a floating platform high in the air. He said he then stepped into the teleportation machine again and was sent somewhere very different.

The second picture showed what he described as a typical home of the distant future. The third showed a flying craft hovering above houses and greenery. He presented all three as the proof his story needed.

A secret programme

According to the man, he got the photos after being picked for a classified time travel programme in the 1990s, mainly because of his academic record in computer development. He also claimed that the secrets of time travel had been unlocked through quantum computing.

He refused to name the organisation behind it. "I can’t say the name of that organisation but I can assure you that organisations like the one I’m describing, and many many more, not only exist but are carrying out secret programmes behind closed doors," he said.

The pictures fall apart

The evidence did not hold up. All three photos turned out to be clever edits of existing images. The floating city was added to a mountain forest valley wallpaper that anyone can download from 7-themes.com.

The supposed home of the future was a manipulated shot of the Antilia building in South Mumbai, India, the private residence of Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries.

Many viewers saw through the stunt straight away. Mike Mathieu wrote that the pictures looked "about as real as Japanese animation", and Vignesh Baidu suggested the traveller should at least take a selfie.

What the physics says

Professor William Hiscock of Montana State University, an authority on time travel, was also unconvinced. He explained that time dilation makes travel forward in time theoretically possible, but going backwards is another matter entirely.

He said travel into the past is "a much more uncertain proposition". Some solutions to Einstein’s equations of General Relativity would let a person meet themselves at an earlier time, but the difficulty is deciding whether such solutions could happen in the real universe or are simply mathematical oddities that clash with known physics.

Where things stand

For now, the man’s identity remains unknown and his claims remain unproven. The photos have been traced back to ordinary sources, and the commenters seem to have made up their minds. If the year 3311 does look like a floating city, nobody has yet shown a genuine picture of it.
