Hang onto those twigs after pruning your trees or shrubs – you can turn them into a cool, natural plant trellis! See how flexible the branches are by bending a few. If they bend without snapping, you’re good to go. This DIY trellis is perfect for both indoor and outdoor plants.
All you need are some tree trimmings, a knife, and a drill. Use a thick, sturdy branch as the base, and coil one or more long, bendy twigs around it, anchoring them into holes you drill.
Lots of different types of branches work well, like willow, dogwood, hazel, and mock orange. But try out what you’ve already got before going out to get more.
Create a bent twig plant support
Take some time to find the right sticks for this project. The base stick should be thicker than the one you’ll be bending, since you’ll be drilling holes in it. Both sticks should still be pretty green. Letting the thinner stick soak in water for a bit can make it more bendy if needed.
Bend the thinner twig into the shape you want, then hold it against the thicker stick to mark where you need to drill the holes. Drill small pilot holes first, then use a bit the same size as the twig to drill all the way through. Insert the bent twig ends into the holes, trimming them a bit with a knife if needed.
Once the twig ends are secure in the base, set up your cool, one-of-a-kind plant trellis!
