Hanging wallpaper can be a real pain, so it’s awesome when you finally finish the job. But your work’s not quite done yet – if you want your wallpaper to look great and last for years, consider adding a topcoat. It’s an easy, affordable way to protect your investment. For just $50 or less, you can make your wallpaper more washable, dirt-resistant, and fade-proof, especially if it gets a lot of sun exposure. That’s a small price to pay to keep your walls looking their best.
One of the best reasons to use wallpaper is the beautiful, vibrant colors and patterns. A topcoat with UV protection can help preserve those colors so they don’t fade over time. And if you’ve got a humid bathroom or kitchen with wallpaper, the topcoat acts as a protective barrier against moisture. It also makes it easier to wipe away any smudges or stains.
Even if your wallpaper claims to be washable, the topcoat can provide extra insurance. It tends to resist dirt really well, which is great if you’ve got little ones running around. Some topcoats even offer fire and mold resistance. So whether you’ve got a custom mural or just a fun, patterned wallpaper, a topcoat is an easy, inexpensive way to keep it looking its best for years to come.
Apply a topcoat on your wallpaper for durability
There are a few different types of affordable wallpaper topcoat products to choose from. The first is aqueous plastic dispersions, also known as “elephant skin” – these are liquid, transparent coatings that usually cost $15-$20 per liter. Liquid laminates are another option, providing high-performance protection and sometimes even UV resistance, but they’re a bit pricier at around $40 per quart.
Water-based polyurethane is probably the easiest and most budget-friendly choice – you can find it at most paint or hardware stores for $12-$23. Just make sure to get the water-based kind, as oil-based polyurethanes can yellow over time. The last type is decorators varnish, which is a hybrid containing polyurethane but offering similar UV and moisture protection as the laminates, for around $35 per pint.
No matter which topcoat you choose, make sure it’s compatible with your wallpaper – you may want to test it in an inconspicuous area first. Apply it just like you would paint, using a brush for edges and a small roller for the rest. And be sure to let your wallpaper fully dry before adding the topcoat. With the right protection, your walls will stay looking fresh and fabulous for years.
