A Michigan man who asked his landlord to deal with a problem at his rented home ended up facing a much bigger one. A security camera inside the house caught the landlord having sex with a woman while the family was away, and the tenant says he is now left wondering what else went on under his roof.
A call about dead birds
Javon Crawford phoned his landlord on Monday and asked him to remove dead birds from the attic. At the time, Crawford and his wife were at the hospital with his sick grandmother, so the house was empty.
It is not clear whether the landlord actually did the job he was called to do. What the camera recorded was something else entirely.
Watching it live
Crawford’s wife received an alert on her phone from the home security camera. The couple opened the feed and watched in real time as the landlord was with a woman directly in front of the lens. They recorded the time-stamped footage so they would have evidence. By his account, it went on for about an hour.
The footage also shows the man moving into the kitchen, where he lingers for a while and appears to pick up a rag before heading back for more. There was no camera in that room, so Crawford has no idea what really happened there. He guessed the landlord "might have been trying to make a sandwich", then admitted, "I don’t know. It’s creepy."
Cleaning up
Crawford said he deep-cleaned the house after they saw the footage, and that his wife was especially appalled because she is a germaphobe.
What bothers him most is how relaxed the landlord looked. Crawford said the man seemed "too comfortable" in the house, which made him ask himself, "What else could be done?" Rent is due next month, and he said writing the landlord a check is "gonna be hard". He joked that he will "write some language in the transfer to him — a special memo."
What happens next
A local news crew tracked the landlord down and showed him the recorded video. He waved the reporters off the property and sped away in his vehicle without answering questions.
Whether he broke any law is far from settled. Because he owns the building Crawford rents, it is not clear that he committed a crime at all. Lawyers and police officers told the news outlet the dispute may end up in court as a civil case, with the landlord’s behavior potentially counted as a violation of the lease.
The woman in the video, who can be seen wearing a pink bonnet, has not been identified. It is also unclear whether she could face charges or be drawn into any civil suit.
For now, neither the landlord nor the woman has been charged with a crime or served with a civil suit. Crawford and his wife are left with a freshly cleaned home, a tape they plan to keep, and a very awkward rent payment on the way.
