A Sacramento woman reported missing last month was not taken away by immigration agents, as her husband told police. Investigators say there was no such operation, and burned human remains found in a neighboring county have now been identified as hers. Her husband has been arrested on murder charges.
A disappearance and a claim
Jasmine Gill, 30, was reported missing by a cousin on October 4. She had last been seen at her Sacramento home on September 30. Her husband, 28-year-old Gurinder Singh Gill, told law enforcement that officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement had detained her while she was retrieving the mail, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators did what any check of that story would require and contacted ICE. The agency confirmed that no enforcement operations had taken place at the Gill residence. The husband’s explanation did not hold up.
Detectives also learned that the couple were going through a divorce and were locked in a custody battle over their child. Authorities said they had noticed "several inconsistencies" in the way Gurinder described his wife’s disappearance.
The discovery in El Dorado County
According to the sheriff’s office, burned human remains had been found in El Dorado County on October 1, the day after Jasmine was last seen at home. They were later identified as hers.
Gurinder was arrested on Wednesday. Sheriff’s office records show he is being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail and faces murder charges. Court documents show he was arraigned on Friday afternoon, though neither court records nor law enforcement currently list any upcoming court dates.
Who Jasmine was
A missing persons poster said she was last seen in Sacramento County near Headstock Street and Allegretto Way. It described her as 5-foot-3, weighing about 137 pounds, and wearing white pajamas with red polka dots. The poster carried a grim warning that "new information indicates her safety may be at risk."
A GoFundMe campaign started by a relative, Daman Gill, paints a picture of a woman building a new life. It says Jasmine was a registered nurse, following in the footsteps of her mother, who worked in the same profession in India. She was also raising a baby boy who is eight months old.
"Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of her story is that she was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby," the fundraiser read. "She was trying to find the freedom, safety, and fresh start they both deserved."
It went on: "Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect."
Where things stand
Jasmine’s family is now seeking legal support on child welfare and custody matters, as the future of her young son remains unsettled.
The GoFundMe had raised about $6,000 by Saturday night. The money is intended to help bring Jasmine’s body home to India, so that her family and relatives there can pay their final respects.
Gurinder remains in custody without bail while the case moves forward.
