A night at the movies in Colombia ended early when a foul smell spread through a packed auditorium and hundreds of people got up and left. The screening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was abandoned on Saturday, August 2, after one cinema-goer reportedly cleared the room with rancid farts. Nobody has been named as the person responsible.
A smell nobody could sit through
The film was showing at the Plaza Bocagrande shopping center in Cartagena, Colombia. The cinema was full, and the screen was dark, when the stench began to spread through the audience. Rather than sit through it, hundreds of viewers stood up and spilled out into the corridor.
Footage from the scene shows crowds gathered outside the auditorium. Some people can be seen covering their noses as they waited. Among them, a person dressed as Spider-Man mingled with the disappointed filmgoers.
According to local reports, the culprit has never been identified. It is unclear whether they failed to make it to the toilet in time or whether someone deliberately let off a stink bomb as a prank.
The internet weighs in
The bizarre incident quickly sparked debate online, with social media users sharing jokes alongside their disbelief. One person said: "There’s no respect any more, but I don’t think anyone is so rotten as to evacuate an entire auditorium." Another wrote: "It must have been someone playing a joke and it went wrong."
A third added: "To ruin a whole cinema like that, only God knows what that person ate." Others went further and branded the mystery culprit the film’s real "villain".
The episode comes after movie theater employees threatened to quit over teenagers’ disgusting behavior in a viral trend, so cinema staff elsewhere have had their own troubles with what happens in the dark.
How things stand now
Despite the disruption, staff did not cancel the screening, although many audience members chose not to return. No injuries were reported, and the cinema continued operating its other screens as normal.
The film at the centre of it all takes place shortly after the events of No Way Home. In that story, Peter’s secret identity as Spider-Man was exposed, he enlisted Doctor Strange for help, and things went terribly wrong when the multiverse was opened. Brand New Day now focuses on Peter navigating a new life in which no-one remembers who he really is. The Punisher and a savage Hulk also appear.
For anyone planning a visit, the advice is to refresh your memory by re-watching Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, starting with Homecoming, then Far From Home and finally No Way Home, as these provide much of the background. You do not need to have watched the shows or films of the Punisher and Hulk, as long as you know who they are. Spider-Man: Brand New Day can be watched in cinemas now.
