A man who gives only his first name, Edward, has gone viral with a startling claim. He says he travelled to the year 5,000 and saw Los Angeles drowned beneath the sea. In the footage he holds up what he says is a photo of the sunken city, and he insists it is a glimpse of an unavoidable future.

His story lands at a time when worries about rising seas are already common. The planet is warming, and that is driving climate change. As temperatures climb, the polar ice caps at both ends of the Earth are melting and sea levels are slowly rising. Environmental campaigners fear that without limits on fossil fuels and pollution, major cities around the world could face devastating floods.

A secret experiment

Edward told his story in an interview with Apex TV, a YouTube channel that focuses on paranormal tales. He says he took part in a top-secret time-travel experiment in 2004. According to him, it sent him 3,000 years into the future.

He says he worked at a laboratory in Los Angeles at the time. His employers allegedly asked him to travel forward and take photographs. Throughout the video his face is hidden and his voice is distorted, which he says is to protect his identity.

Wooden buildings and a flooded city

Edward says the arrival came as a huge shock. He expected to find the entertainment capital of California much as he had left it. Instead he says he found it underwater.

"I will tell you a story that will amaze you and you will be astonished," he said. He described appearing in a strange place that he found unbelievable. "I was standing on a huge wooden platform," he said, adding that the houses and buildings around him were also made of wood. Only later, he says, did he realise it was Los Angeles, now beneath the water.

His account gets stranger still. Edward claims he spoke with residents of Atlantis, the legendary sunken civilization. They allegedly told him that the catastrophic flooding had been caused by climate change.

What the evidence says

Nothing in the story has been verified. Plenty of people have called themselves time travellers over the years, and others have told tales about the whereabouts of missing people. None of these claims has ever been confirmed, and time travel remains an unproven achievement despite many conspiracy theories.

NASA has also weighed in on the subject. The agency says the kind of time travel Edward describes "only happens in books and movies". It explained that humans cannot climb into a time machine and go back in time. However, clocks on aeroplanes and satellites do run at a different speed from those on Earth.

The agency added that it is not possible to use a machine to travel hundreds of years into the past or future. Still, the maths behind time travel does affect everyday things, such as GPS satellites.

Where it stands now

Edward’s identity is still hidden, and his photo and his tale remain unproven. For now, the clip is a viral curiosity that mixes science fiction with real fears about the changing climate. Whether viewers see it as a warning from tomorrow or just a good yarn is left up to them.
