A woman named Patty Ellen says she died on the operating table during an emergency C-section, and that what she experienced next has removed her lifelong fear of death. She describes floating above her own body, watching her life replay on an enormous screen, and sensing a loving presence she could not identify. Stories like hers are not new, but the lesson she says she brought back is what makes her account stand out.
For hundreds of years, people who survived close calls have talked about their lives flashing before their eyes. Neurologists now believe the sensation is real and is triggered by the brain reacting to a lack of oxygen. Patty, however, is certain her own life review came from something else entirely.
When the monitor went flat
Patty says she remembers being wheeled into the operating room and hearing the heart monitor beeping. Then, she says, it went flat, and at that very moment she rose out of her body and hovered above the scene.
Within seconds, she says, she found herself in the middle of a 360-degree "movie screen" showing key moments from her life. "It was stopping at certain points in my life," she recalled. "Some were good, some were not so good in the way I treated people."
As the replay lingered on moments she regretted, Patty began to panic. She briefly thought, "I’m going to Hell," and believed she was being shown these scenes as a verdict. Then she felt someone beside her place a hand on her shoulder and tell her she was doing OK and should not worry.
Forgiveness and a choice
Although the review seemed to focus on her failings, Patty says the biggest takeaway was forgiveness, both of other people and of herself. She found forgiving herself very hard and has worked on it a great deal since.
Then she heard her newborn son’s first cry. At that same moment, she says, the unknown presence gave her a feeling of being loved for eternity. "I only wish that I knew who it was," she said. "I have no clue."
The presence then offered her a choice, through telepathy: stay or return to the physical world. Because her baby had just been born, she chose to go back. She says she saw six or seven doctors and nurses around her, apparently giving CPR. When she said she wanted to be with her baby, she was, in her words, "immediately shot back" into her body.
No longer afraid
Patty says she came back with a clear message about why we are here: to learn unconditional love, compassion, forgiveness, kindness and acceptance.
She also says that in her younger years she lived in deep fear of dying. That has now changed. "The biggest, most important thing is that I’m no longer afraid to die," she said. "And the weird thing is that I can’t wait to go back." For now, she continues to work on forgiving herself and to share her story.
